In a word, "wow." Rainbow Springs is one of the clearest springs in Florida. It's like you're flying underwater the visibility is so good. Once operated as a tourist attraction park, Rainbow Springs is now owned and operated by the state. Great efforts have been made to preserve this site. It includes a large head spring, Rainbow Spring, that has a swimming area roped off. Depths reach 16 feet. There are several vents throughout the head spring and lots of rock formations to explore. Bass and Brim swim all around you. The site also has tropical gardens and trails including 2 artificial waterfalls that are picturesque. There is no scuba allowed, however you can do an awesome drift dive down the Rainbow River. The Rainbow River features several other small springs that can be explored by the diver or snorkeler. Depths in Rainbow River average about 7 feet. You can rent canoes from Rainbow Springs State Park or take one of the many tour/dive boats down the river. The only complaint, the roped-off swimming area in the headspring limits exploration to some of the best parts.
3 miles North of Dunnellon on US 41. Look for big sign on right side of road.
